Manarola to Volastra

This morning we took the train to Manarola so that we could walk to Volastra, which was described as an easy hike of about 1.5 hours.  We thought it looked good because the track looked paved, which it was for a while and then it turned into a very vertical climb with nothing to hold onto for balance or to support tired legs.  When you find yourself walking with your hands as much as your legs, it's time to rethink the situation.  We came back along the path and walked along the original coastal path until we could go no further, due to the land slides of 2011.  The original path would have been quite easy to walk and the views are unbelievably beautiful.  I can see why the locals might be quietly happy that the track is closed.  They still get ferry loads of people every 1/2 hour, pouring into the towns and spending their money.  We have been happy with all the towns, but they are particularly lovely in the early morning and the early evening, when many day visitors have gone.
We love Monterosso, and feel we have the best of both worlds; our hotel, which has very friendly staff, is near the beach which we love and the 'old town' is a 5 minute stroll away.  I am writing this while Paul is examining the insides of his eyeballs and before we head down for a swim.  The water temperature is great; not too cold but not like a bath either.  We both struggle a little on the stoney beech and are grateful there are no photos of our ungainly entrance and exit from the sea!
Hoping you are all well and keeping warm.
Ciao
