Last Day in Firenze

We spent our last day in Firenze enjoying the fair weather and walking the city.  We followed the Arno to the beautiful church of Santa Croce, which still functions as a church, to see the tombs of Galileo, Michealangelo and Machiavelli.  We also read about the devastation of the artworks of the church in the1966 flood.  The vaulted ceilings and elegant stained glass windows give light and a sense of peace.  Here, you have the sense of something sacred, unlike the Duomo which, like St Peter's in Rome, seems more about power and status than anything else.

From Santa Croce we made our way over the Arno, once again, to climb up to Michaelangelo Piazzale, which provides a lovely vista over the city and surrounding hills.  On our way back down, we ran into a small but joyous wedding party with the church bells announcing the new couple.

We enjoyed several visits to the Mercato Cenrale, which brought back great memories of our time there with the boys and Tony & Rae in 2005. Tonight we will wander through the street markets and enjoy the vibe of Saturday night in Firenze.
