Lucca
We had an uneventful rail journey from Cinque Terre to Lucca and were delighted to find that our room was ready even though it was before noon. It is a quaint, family run hotel and our room is relatively spacious. Lucca is a small walled city with lovely tree lined streets. Plane trees are interspersed with flowering crepe myrtles which help to dissipate the heat somewhat. We began the 4 km walk around the wall but didn't quite complete it as we went looking for the amphitheatre marked on the town map. While the circular shape of the amphitheatre is still visible, shops, bars and cafes use the space today. We plan to hire a couple of bikes tomorrow to see more of Lucca.
Paul has been offered a free drink tonight, as a nice young man at reception noticed his birth date on his passport when we checked in. We have found a restaurant on the wall, which we hope to go to for Paul's special night.
